The GRE Test for Dummies, Fifth Edition

Suzee Vlk

For Dummies, 2002-09-01

Price: $16.99

It goes without saying that if you're taking the GRE you're not really a dummy. But GRE scores are an important part of any graduate-school application--so you need to do your best. Suzee Vlk, long time test-prep specialist and author of several Dummies books, can help. The GRE for Dummies is packed with useful information and strategies to help you prepare for the test. The book includes advice on how to use the book efficiently (Vlk estimates you'll need 31 hours to work through it), review chapters for all three sections of the exam, and two complete practice exams. Vlk also discusses the pros and cons of taking the GRE by computer or with paper and pencil and special advice for those who choose to take the computer-based test. In familiar Dummies style, Vlk includes a handy tear-out "Cheat Sheet" with a summary of the most important information and a "Part of Tens" section with 10 "wrong rumors" about the GRE and 10 relaxation techniques to use before and during the exam. With its witty writing, helpful icons in the margins pointing out important information, and useful vocabulary scattered throughout, The GRE for Dummies makes test preparation easy and relatively painless. --C. Reviews:

Outdated
It is a good book but it is outdated. The math section is the best part of it. You are better of getting a book from another company like the princeton review until they update this book.
good buy
I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It has a lot of useful tips and tricks to master the GRE, I would recommend it to anybody who's looking for a quick refresher of concepts they already know.
Helpful
Taking the GRE for any aspiring graduate student can be a daunting prospect. However, taking the exam when the time you've been out of school can be calculated in decades, it is frightening. There are many study guides out there and choosing one takes a bit of study in itself.

The GRE Test for Dummies is one of the simpler to understand and get through. It is well organized. One of the most helpful things it does is give the student a pretty good idea of what to expect at the testing site, how the test will appear on the computer, the importance given to each question and answer. There are places, however, where the wording is confusing and unclear and if you're in a hurry to get through it, the humor might actually be an irritant.

After going through the study section, then taking the sample test, there seems to be no correlation with a few of the actual questions in the math or the Quantitative section. The writing skills section is as good as it can be, given the nature of the task.

All in all, this is a good general study guide, but for those needing more help with math, another might work better.
Great quck study book
I am not a person to sit around for hours and hours to study. This book was great, because it reviewed all the basics and refreshed my memory quickly and easily. If you're a heavy studier, this book is a great starter book, then you can always read as many other books as you want. For me, I just read this one, and was quite satisfied with the tips and review it provided. I've reccomended this book to all my friends, who are going to take the GRE.
GRE for dummies, fifth edition
Beware...althought this text is easy (and relatively painless) to read, the math section does NOT provide adequate preparation. Several types of questions found on the actual GRE are nowhere to be found in this supposedly comprehensive study guide. I was very disappointed when, after studying the math section religiously, I encountered problems on the GRE that I could have easily solved, had they been reviewed in the math section of the study guide. I would recommend using this guide in conjunction with another (possibly the ETS) study guide to prepare for the GRE.
